Eating Disorders Management: Improving the Systems of Care in Your Community

SMEDA presented a conference October 11 & 12, 2013. The conference focused on topics related to treatment and care of the patient with an eating disorder, communication surrounding care, and community resources for eating disorders.

Advanced Training Program: Treatment of Difficult and Chronically Eating Disordered Patients

Borgess Hospital hosted a four day, intensive course developed for the advanced eating disorder specialistled by Dr.Amy Baker-Dennis. The sessions covered:

  • Understanding the neurobiology of eating disorders
  • The stages of treatment for eating disorder patients with borderline personality: An integrated approach (Psychodynamic approach coupled with DBT/CBT)
  • Clinical implications and treatment strategies for patients with comorbid depression, substance abuse or trauma, sexual abuse and PTSD
  • Treating children and adolescents with eating disorders – a family therapy approach and parent coaching strategies
  • Treatment of eating disorder patients with comorbid personality disorders
  • Managing chronically eating disordered patients
  • Relapse prevention
  • Theoretical orientation and case conceptualization. confronting countertransference issues
  • Understanding what patients you work best with

The Happenings at WMU During Eating Disorders Awareness Month

WMU Dietetic students will be 'manning' LOVE YOUR SHAPE information tables to help increase awareness regarding eating disorders and body image issues.   General eating disorder/body image information, campus and community resources and LOVE YOUR SHAPE buttons will be available.

  • Monday, February 18, 7-10pm, Student Recreation Center, lower level near Fitness Studios.
  • Tuesday, February 19, 11am-2pm, Student Recreation Center, main lobby.
  • Wednesday, February 20, 11am-2pm, Bernhard Center, main lobby.

There will also be a Body Image workshop during the month of February - date/time TBD and helpful information on the newly updated WMU Sindecuse Health Center website

Food Prisons: A Musical about eating disorders and body image

Students at Western Michigan University presented Food Prisons, a musical play about body image and eating disorders examining the life we lead when we're obsessed with food and how we look in today's society. The original play was written and directed by Christine Iaderosa, Coordinator, Theater for Community Health with music composed and directed by Adam Schumaker.

Art Hop February 2012

The first Friday of the month, there is the Art Hop in downtown Kalamazoo. People come to stroll through the streets to see some spectacular Art! SMEDA, in cooperation with the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo, sponsored an exhibit of works by artists who are, or have been, struggling with eating disorders in the Kalamazoo Art Hop in 2010 and 2012.  We received indirect support from the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo, and displayed the pieces in the James C. Westin Gallery at the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo.  The theme for the 2012 exhibit was Hope and Healing. 

America the Beautiful

Director Darryl Roberts' provocative documentary examines America's fixation with outward appearance and the unrealistic standards of beauty dictated to the public by the media, pop culture and the fashion industry. Featuring interviews with fashion experts, media personalities and celebrities such as Mena Suvari and Aisha Tyler, the film looks at everything from plastic surgery's growing popularity to widespread concerns about eating disorders.

Documentary provocateur Darryl Roberts returns with another look at the American beauty industry, this time examining how the national obsession with weight loss has negatively affected our perception of what really constitutes a healthy weight.
